We're Moving!

Medical Ministry International is excited to announce our office and warehouse are moving! We will be joining Campus 621, a space where charities work together in the same building for local and global renewal. The building is owned by EduDeo Ministries, a charity well-known to MMI, who serves children in developing countries with quality education rooted in a Biblical worldview.

The building is located at 621 Barton St E, Hamilton, ON L8L 3A110km west of our current location.

Renovations are underway and the warehouse is fully moved. The offices should be moved by the end of September.

When our current location went up for sale this spring, we did not know where our new home would be, but God is faithful!  We are excited for this next season of ministry as we continue providing spiritual and compassionate health care in this world in need. Will you support us as we serve alongside the Campus621 community? Donate toward our move and renovations or come visit us this fall!

MMI Awarded Stronger Together 2017 Grant

Cervical Cancer Screening on the Amazon River Utilizing New Canadian Technology: $75,000

To pilot HPV screening for women in remote communities along the Colombian Amazon and tributaries using new Canadian medical technology.

MMI Amazon will develop a pilot project to screen 500 women from up to 20 villages along 140 kilometres of the Amazon, Loretoyacu, and Atacuary Rivers between Ronda and San Pedro de Tipisca in the remote Colombian Amazon Region. MMI Amazon is currently the only provider of health care services to these villages home to three indigenous tribes: Ticuna, Cocama, and Yagua. MMI Amazon is making regular visits to these villages with their local staff and also host MMI medical project teams to support their efforts.

To facilitate the technical screening involved, MMI will partner with a new Canadian start-up company, Eve Medical. Eve Medical has recently received approval to sell its Eve Kit in Canada to increase screening rates among Canadian women and reduce existing barriers for women by providing an at home screening method for Canadian women. The HerSwabTM device works similarly to insertion of a tampon. The founder of Eve Medical is excited to make her device available at their production cost for use in this screening program. By utilizing this newest form of technology, designed and manufactured in Canada, and bringing it to remote regions of the Amazon, MMI will be providing a level of care available only to the affluent in Colombia who would be accessing Pap Smears performed by a medical professional at a clinic. Once collected, samples will be transported to a lab for HPV and STI testing in Bogota, Colombia.  Results will be collected and tracked by MMI Amazon staff.

The anticipated 100 women with positive HPV results will be transported and connected to a follow-up program executed by Dr. Gutierrez, the gynaecologist at the MMI partner health center, Clinica Leticia. Dr. Javier holds a Masters in Epidemiology and has 20 years experience in the Amazon. Each woman will receive additional diagnostic care, specialized treatment, and if necessary, surgery and cancer treatment. The cost of treatment provided by Clinica Leticia will be government-funded. MMI Amazon has successfully bridged this gap in the Colombian health care system by identifying patients on MMI medical teams who required advanced follow up from Clinica Leticia.

Given the positive reputation of MMI Amazon in these communities, this screening program is a timely and relevant use of innovative technology and delivery methods to identify up to 100 women in the remote Amazon who have a 25% chance of carrying high risk HPV strains which often lead to the most frequent cancer in their population. By testing for common STIs, MMI will also identify and ensure treatment for women who may experience infertility, ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, preterm delivery, or health risks for their newborns.

With education and ongoing preventative care, the population of approximately 8,000 will benefit from the pilot project. Cultural changes take time. However, with a preventative health plan, screening, and follow-up, a reduced incidence of advanced intervention is possible. MMI believes in its Integrated Health Program which incorporates preventative health education and spiritual teaching to care for the whole person. Each woman participating in this screening program will be shown the love and grace of God by the MMI Amazon teams.

Thank you to the partnering foundations of Stronger Together for making this initiative possible with your grant of $75,000.

Dear MMI Friends in Florida

Many of you have been long time supporters and participants with Medical Ministry International. You have travelled and served in areas of need in our world as we provide health care in the name of Jesus. Some of you have joined us in prayer for those in the countries we serve. As you deal with the effects of Hurricane Irma, we would like you to know the MMI family is praying for you. As an office staff, we join together once a week, not only to discuss upcoming plans for the ministry, but also to commit the ministry to prayer. We pray for our project teams, our leaders, and our volunteers.  Thank you to those of you who have communicated to let us know you have temporarily re-situated, shared details so we can pray for you more specifically, and also shared thanks for limited damage in your areas.

Thank you for being part of the MMI family and caring in others. This week, please know we care for you specifically. May God bring you and your families comfort during these challenging days.

In Him,

Leanne Ferris, Executive Director

Update on Dominican Republic & Mexico

Mexico: Our Mexican Project Directors are safe following the earthquake, thank you for your prayers. Dan Copeland lives with his family in the Chiapas Region. Despite damage to buildings in the area, there was no damage to their home. Tremors are still ongoing every 10-15 minutes since last night. MMI Canada Continues Ministry following USA Announcement to Cease Operations

2015 has been an exciting year of renewal for Medical Ministry International Canada (MMI Canada), located in Stoney Creek, Ontario.  Since October 2014, MMI Canada has not been affiliated with Medical Ministry International in the USA. For the past year, we have been collaborating directly with our international locations and planning opportunities to serve in response to identified needs in local areas.  MMI Canada is currently responding to the requests of project directors to ensure projects continue without interruption, following the recent announcement that MMI USA is ceasing operations.

MMI Canada is called to bring spiritual and compassionate health care in this world of need.  To that end, we have established suitable agreements with individuals and organizations with whom we are directly partnering.

For our American friends, in January 2015, we established a co-sponsor relationship between the programs of MMI Canada and I Care San Antonio (ICSA) Global Missions.   ICSA, a 501(c)3 in the USA, has been a supporter of our project teams for over 20 years. We were pleased to formalize our relationship to ensure Americans can participate on projects and financially support international partners, programs, and capital projects while receiving a tax receipt in accordance with the regulations of the IRS. To learn more about ICSA, see their website at http://www.icare-sa.org/global.

MMI Canada currently has over 50 project team opportunities for 2016 listed on our website.

roject dates and locations will continue to be added as we finalize details. You will see in this email the locations of our upcoming opportunities complete with photos of those who will be leading these teams. MMI Canada’s agreements will ensure that funding for project teams, international partners, programs and capital projects will be forwarded to designated countries and partners in a timely manner.

MMI Canada continues to serve some of the neediest people in our world.  We can make a difference together! Canadians and Americans can donate now at http://www.mmicanada.ca/donate-cad/  or http://www.mmicanada.ca/donate-usd/.
